Juan Garcia Mansilla Creates the “RDSV” Concept in Rhino and Bunkspeed

How it was accomplished:

RDSV was modeled entirely in Rhinoceros. All renderings were created using Bunkspeed Shot. Two separate BIFs were used, one for the shiny clean studio shots and another one for the dirty, worn out action shots. All post processing was done in Photoshop.

This was strictly a personal project, just for the fun of it.

He has been using Bunkspeed rendering products since the days of Hypershot, then in 2011, moved to Bunkspeed Shot.

 “It has been a fundamental tool for me in College… it allowed me to visualize and show ideas to others in very fast ways. As a tool, it increased the quality of my work and minimized the time it took me to get it done. It is now a permanent addition to my workflow.” – Says Juan

The RDSV is a 2 seater high speed vehicle for use in any polar environment. It would aptly serve polar exploration, rescue missions, medical emergencies or even sport applications, basically anything that requires high speeds over rough terrain or long distances. The whole idea started with the traction system, something that could allow high speeds across Antarctica but could also climb up a mountain for an avalanche rescue operation. Then the whole vehicle was built around it.

RDSV features an adaptive traction system that allows for an effective displacement over both ice/hard snow or deep snow. Each wheel is made up by twelve individual units, each with two different paddles: a small one (for hard surfaces) and a big one (for deep snow). Depending on the terrain, each unit rotates accordingly to expose the desired paddle.

The current paradigm for snow vehicles states: “Simple Traction at the rear, two skids at the front”. RDSV inverts this paradigm to achieve more traction, improving deep snow performance and displacement in sloped terrain.

The vehicle also features a universal docking system and solar panel at the top. This allows the addition of multiple accessories from ski & snowboard cages to radars and other sensors. It can also be adapted to hold an injured person in the back.

With CGI being used more widely than ever throughout product marketing, Blue Sky CGI have discovered a way to stand out. The addition of Bunkspeed Pro Suite to their tool box, along with their expertise are helping them stay ahead of the game.

Blue Sky CGI were courteous enough to let us in on exactly how they do this.

Imagine that a global ad agency needs to create a series of images for Ford Ranger. The location in mind is in Thailand. Due to the remote locations and unpredictability of the weather CG is clearly the way to go.

In the studio CAD data used to generate 3D-models of the car was being prepared for realistic shading and material mapping. At the same time the photographic team is off to Thailand. On the team – the art director, photographer, CG operator, producer, prop stylists and assistants. As the photographic team shoots backplates and matching HDRI lightdomes, the source is sent back to the studio where its is prepped and set up in the CG environment. The photographer and art director then work with the CG operator to set the camera and lighting. This can be done back in the studio or directed remotely. Next comes the high resolution rendering which gives the product proper lighting, reflections, and any masks the retoucher might require. Lastly the image is composited into the background and final retouching takes place.

Directors at Blue Sky CGI, Rick Chou and Lee Waters concur: “As modern equipment and software continue to improve, one major difference between how photography worked in the old days versus modern advertising is the exposure to digital capability and visualization…”

“Security issues are easier to control. The large cost of prototypes is eliminated. Earlier production starts are possible and realistic visualizations of the final product are viewable during the design phase. There are broader creative possibilities, less weather dependency, and it is easier to make changes updating the model year. Also the speed and ease of global communications has opened up the whole world as potential clients.”

Along with their clients (Audi, BMW, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Lexus, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota – to name a few), Blue Sky CGI is currently producing projects for Ford’s use in Europe, for Roewe’s use in Asia, and images are being worked on for a yacht designer from Amsterdam.”

David Tonkinson Profile PictureDavid is a UK-based Industrial Designer with a passion for creating user-centered products with strong aesthetic identities and unique personalities. He graduated in 2008 from Bournemouth University’s School of Design, Engineering and Computing on the south coast of England after studying BA (Hons) Industrial Design. His university thesis project, the “Capsule Caravan”, went on to generate a great deal of attention, both in the UK and internationally, and was widely published in newspapers, magazines and design-centered blogs. Images of the design are on permanent collection at Germany’s Erwin Hymer Museum, a museum dedicated to the history and design of caravans.

David has worked as a freelancer and as a design consultant at product design consultancy Haughton Design in Staffordshire. While working for Haughton Design, he had the opportunity to work on projects across a variety of industries, including consumer medical, industrial, agricultural, and street furniture. David has used Bunkspeed’s products to help in creating realistic and striking imagery to demonstrate design concepts, create product marketing material, and to sell ideas to clients, investors, and manufacturers.

NVIDIA Maximus and Bunkspeed Technology Helps Drive the Silver Arrow Mercedes-Benz Concept Car for the LA Auto Show Design Challenge

Each year at the LA Auto Show in Los Angeles, design studios are invited to compete in a Design Challenge to create entire story lines based on and featuring extreme car designs.

For several years, the Advanced Design Center California, the North American research and development division of Mercedes-Benz, has competed in the LA Auto Show Design Challenge. Reinvention Merges Art and Science
Designer Jason Wilbur redefined the idea of the watch and changed the game. His masterpiece came to be known as the Devon Tread 1, a luxury timepiece that immediately established leading-edge vision and commanded artistry when the concept was introduced to the public in April 2010.

Devon Tread 1 is a radical departure from the typical dial-and-needle design. Inspired by industrial conveyor belts and motorcycles, the watch’s movements center on a series of overlapping, interwoven belts encased in glass-reinforced nylon material that is typically used in avionics – it is bullet-proof, anti-reflective and can withstand temperatures ranging from negative 20°F to 150°F.

Photorealism Powers Ideas
As with most game changing ideas, the design invited many skeptics – claiming Wilbur was setting out to conquer the impossible. He realized sketches were not enough to entice engineers to manufacture his design, and convince financiers to fund his project.

He needed ultra-realistic images that would truly showcase the watch’s cutting-edge characteristics and emotional value.

“When you are describing a future concept, it is essential to have realistic images that back-up your vision,” said Wilbur. “The more realistic you can portray the form and details, the more people are going to buy into it.”

The design encompassed a lot of intricate details; everything was exposed. “When you have that kind of design, traditional rendering software won’t give you the realism and attention to details needed to communicate the emotional value,” said Wilbur.

Wilbur imported the models created in DS® Solidworks® into Bunkspeed SHOT™ 3D rendering software, which allowed him to create photorealistic representations of the Devon Tread 1 that truly communicated the intricate details.

Devon Watch on Scratched Metal Table“Bunkspeed SHOT allowed me to change subtleties and characteristics on the fly without compromising the quality of the image,” continued Wilbur. “It is so intuitive, I thought I was doing something wrong.”

 

Making the Impossible Happen
It is said that a luxury watch takes roughly three to five years to develop – Devon Tread 1 broke the mold and dramatically shorted this process. Within months, Wilbur was able to create photorealistic imagery for product development in parallel with marketing purposes to help generate interest.

The SHOT scenes provided the engineers with a realistic representation of the watch’s features and details, which minimized the number of alterations and mistakes that often take place through the design process. Utilizing SHOT’s unique camera and lighting features enabled Wilbur to precisely simulate a product photo shoot; which was the driving force for generating interest with retailers and the media.

“The rendered images looked so real, retailers kept asking for us to bring in the real watch. They didn’t understand that the watch didn’t exist,” said Wilbur. “Without the mind-blowing renderings produced by Bunkspeed SHOT, this project wouldn’t have happened. The watch looked so real you thought you could touch it!”

While the final product was not available in stores until November 2010, the concept was introduced to consumers in April 2010. In August 2010 Watch Journal, a monthly magazine devoted to the world of luxury watches, showcased the Devon Tread 1 on its cover in August 2010 – marking the first time the magazine used a rendered image for the cover.
